Fornell took McGee to a small Italian restaurant he knew which served very good, non-elaborate food and the staff didn't appear every two minutes to ask if they needed anything else or to inquire if their meal was all right.

He wasn't sure how it happened but as they settled down into their seats their fingers touched and Fornell felt a tingling sensation rush through his body. He glanced at McGee and saw his eyes were wider than usual and after a second he glanced away from Fornell and concentrated on unfolding his napkin and then on studying the menu.

"Have you decided what you'd like?"

"Um, I haven't eaten much Italian food, other than pizza. What would your recommend, Agent Fornell?"

To his surprise Fornell felt very touched to be asked. However, before he answered he said softly, "It's Tobias. And you prefer Timothy rather than Tim, don't you?"

The look that crossed McGee's face told Fornell how pleased he was that someone had taken the trouble to ask. He nodded. "Yes, I do. But most people just . . ." He trailed off and shrugged.

Fornell leaned forward and touched McGee's hand, noticing how clean and short his fingernails were. "You should tell them you prefer Timothy," he said. McGee just flushed again and turned his attention back to the menu.

Fornell watched him for a moment; he could understand why McGee felt he couldn't tell Gibbs and DiNozzo in particular that he preferred 'Timothy. He suspected the only person at NCIS to use his full name was Ducky, but then Ducky used everyone's full name.

He looked at the menu again and then back at McGee. "I'm going to have tonight's chef's special. I've had it before and it's excellent, even better than Mamma used to make." He deliberately said the final few words in an Italian accent.

McGee smiled. "I'll have it too then."

They enjoyed a very pleasant dinner; Fornell couldn't remember the last meal he had enjoyed quite as much. McGee was good company, intelligent without letting everyone know he was and his knowledge went well beyond computers and other geek things. Fornell really enjoyed himself.

He enjoyed himself so much he didn’t want the evening to end, but something told him not to invite McGee back to his house for coffee. And yet he wanted to see McGee again. He opened his mouth just as McGee began to speak. "Go ahead," he said.

McGee swallowed and looked away from Fornell, down at his own hand that rested on the table; he seemed to be studying his fingernails. "I've been invited to another writer's book launch party," he said, still not looking up. "And I wondered if you'd like to come with me, Tobias," he added softly, now looking up.

Fornell swallowed hard and for a moment let his fingertips touch McGee's. "Thank you. I'd like that very much, Timothy," he said; the look of delight on McGee's face warmed him and made him very happy indeed.
