RESTON HOUSE NEW YEAR'S EVE 2009
The bongs of Ducky's grandfather clock matched the muted sounds of the television counting down the last few seconds of 2009.
As the last bong bonged and people began to scream and hug one another, Jethro turned off the television and picked up his glass. "Happy New Year, Duck," he said, slipping one arm around Ducky's shoulders and raising his glass.
"Happy New Year, my dear Jethro." Ducky moved into the embrace and clinked his glass against Jethro's. "I must confess to being slightly alarmed at how quickly this year has gone."
"Know what you mean, Duck. So," Jethro said, his arm still resting around Ducky's shoulders. "You made any New Year's resolutions?" He asked the question idly, expecting a negative answer or something like, 'at my age, my dear Jethro, one does not waste time making resolutions one knows one won't keep'.
Thus when Ducky sat forward, looked at him and said, "As a matter of fact, Jethro, I have made one, yes," Jethro was stunned. "Would you like to know what it is?"
Suddenly Jethro wasn't sure. "Only if you want to tell me."
Ducky chuckled softly. "Ah, Jethro. Do you not think had I not wished to tell you that I would have answered in the negative?"
"Um." Jethro wasn't even sure he followed Ducky's words.
"I have decided that during 2010 I shall return to Britain."
Jethro felt suddenly cold. "For good?"
"No. Not at all. At least not . . . No. I shall merely apply for extended leave and pay my home country a visit. I think it's time, and now Mother has passed away . . . Oh, Jethro, do not look like that. I shall return. Now, once again, Happy New Year, my dear."
"Happy New Year, Duck," Jethro managed. Suddenly not knowing if it was or not.
