It was 6:00 a.m. when Tim hurried into NCIS. Pausing long enough to grab a Caf-Pow and a coffee, he hurried down to Abby's lab. He knew it wouldn't be long before she arrived; once a month she did full check on Major Mass-Spec and her other babies.
Jimmy and he were having their first 'real' date that evening. But before they did he wanted to talk to Abby.
"Timmy!" Abby bounced into her lab. "You're early. Is that for me?" She snatched the Caf-Pow from Tim's hand, took a long slurp, then looked at Tim. "Is something wrong?"
Tim shook his head. "No, nothing's wrong, Abby. I just wanted to tell you something."
She stared at him, before gazing at her mass-spectrometer. After a second she looked at him again. "Tell away." She sat on the stool next to him.
"Abby?"
"Timmy?"
"Three nights ago Jimmy came to The Marriage of Figaro with me. My agent gave me tickets," he added hurriedly.
"And?"
"And we went back to his apartment for a late dinner."
"And?"
"And," Tim paused; it had all seemed simple in his head. He swallowed hard; he could do this. "And we both realized we wanted to see each other again, outside of work," he added in a rush.
To his surprise Abby's eyes began to gleam and she smiled her pussycat smile as she jumped down, grabbed Tim and hugged him hard. "I'm really happy for you, Timmy. You and Jimmy will make a really cute couple!" She kissed him on each cheek.
"Um," Tim was still somewhat taken aback. "You think so?"
"Of course! You know, I should have realized. That time Jimmy and I got super-glued together and you were so mad. You weren't mad with Jimmy, you were mad with me."
Tim shook his head. "No, Abby," he said gently. "I was mad with Jimmy. Back then it was you and only you."
Abby put her arm through his. "But now it's Jimmy," she said quietly.
Tim nodded. "I think so, Abby. Yes. I really do think so. It just feels . . . Right," he finally said. Abby continued to beam at him. "The only thing is . . ."
"Yes?"
"Gibbs."
"He'll be fine," Abby declared.
"What about Rule Twelve?"
Abby shrugged it off. "Jimmy's not a field agent."
"No, but he goes out to crime scenes."
"He'll be fine." Abby repeated, giving Tim her 'look'.
"Tony'll give me hell."
"Only because he loves you as his little brother," she said. "He does," she added, reading Tim's mind. "Now," she kissed him again. "Off you go and let me test my babies."
Tim caught her arm. "Abby? You really are okay with this, aren't you?"
She looked at him and pulled him into another tight embrace. "Of course I am. You're my best friend, Timmy. You always will be. I want you to be happy. Now go!"
"I love you too, Abby." He blinked hard to stop the tears from showing. She just smiled at him.
