"I think that will do for this morning. Now go and wash your hands and change, Mr. Palmer, I am taking you out to lunch."
Ducky tried not to smile at the look that crossed his young assistant's face. It was a mixture of incredulity, surprise, delight, disbelief and, as Ducky watched, a faint hint of concern appeared.
"Lunch, Doctor?" Jimmy's voice matched his tone.
Ducky patted his arm. "Yes, Jimmy. Lunch. There's something I wish to discuss with you and as the walls in this place often seem to have ears, I would rather do so outside of this building. Don't worry," he added swiftly, as concern became the main look in Jimmy's eyes. "I assure you nothing is wrong."
"Now," he said, as they sat at a table in one of his favorite restaurants. "I wish to discuss your future."
"My future?" Jimmy blinked.
Ducky nodded. "Yes. I believe you wish to attend Medical School, do you not?"
Jimmy nodded. "Yes, Doctor. I do, but -"
"You are afraid you will not be able to afford to do so?"
Jimmy's eyes widened and he stared at Ducky. "Yes. And I can't ask Mom to help. I know the local school says I can study part-time and stay working at NCIS, but that won't -"
"Jimmy."
"Yes, Doctor."
"You do not have to worry about the cost."
Jimmy blinked. "I don't understand, Doctor," he said.
"I will pay your school fees," Ducky said calmly.
Jimmy's eyes widened even more. "You?"
Ducky nodded.
"But . . . But . . . But . . . But why, Doctor?"
Ducky smiled and patted Jimmy's hand. "Because, Jimmy," he said. "I believe in you. Now shall we order?"
"But, Doctor. I -"
"Yes, Jimmy, you can. And you will. Now that's settled." And patting Jimmy's hand once more, Ducky caught a passing waiter's eye.
Something To Tell You is the sequel to this story.
