From across the room Napoleon saw Illya's gun jam.

He saw the flash of horror that crossed his partner's face.

He couldn't help him. He was held captive. But he tried.

He struggled. To no avail.

He saw the look of delight that crossed the faces of their adversaries.

He struggled again.

And then he knew.

He knew why Mr. Waverly had threatened to part them: losing a partner was bad; losing a lover was so much worse.

He watched three men close in on Illya.

He watched as they fell to the floor.

The crafty Russian had been bluffing.
