"Let her go, Peters."

"I warned you, Lynley. I would get my revenge."

"Not Barbara. Please."

"Why, because you love her?"

"Yes. Damn, you, yes."

"I loved Claire, it didn't stop you. Thomas Lynley, 8th Earl of Asherton; you had to have her. Well, now I'm taking yours." Peters began to squeeze the trigger of the gun resting against Barbara's temple.

"No! Barbara!"

"Tommy?" She switched the light on and looked at him.

"Barbara?" he whispered. "I . . ."

"It was a dream," she said soothingly. "Just a dream. It's all right." She pulled him into her arms and tenderly kissed him.
