Jethro watched his lover doze.
Ducky was going to be seventy that year and Jethro wanted to give him something special. But he didn't know what.
Under his gaze, Ducky opened his eyes. "I'm sure there must be something more interesting for you to do than watch me sleep."
Jethro shrugged. "Can't think of anything."
Ducky chuckled softly. "I sometimes think you, Leroy Jethro Gibbs, are softer than I am."
Jethro laughed. "Only with you, Duck." He crossed the room and sat down on the arm of Ducky's chair. "Duck?"
"My dear?"
"You know it's your seventieth birthday this year -"
"Well, yes, Jethro, amazingly I was aware of that fact." Ducky's teased and rested against Jethro.
"One of these days, Duck," Jethro mock-threatened, learning down to kiss Ducky.
"Yes?" Ducky replied brightly.
Jethro shook his head. "Be serious, Duck. Your birthday. I want to give you something really special. Something you really want."
"That's kind of you, Jethro, but I have everything I could -"
"No. None of that. Come on, Duck, there must be something. Something you've always wanted to do. Somewhere you've always wanted to go. Anything."
Ducky was silent for a moment. Then said, "Well . . ."
"Yeah?"
"But it's foolish."
"Duck!" Jethro resorted to tone he used to use at the office when Ducky was rambling.
"Oh, very well then. I have always wanted to go to the Olympics and as it's in Britain this year . . . But it's not possible."
"And why would that be?"
"It's far too late - No, Jethro. I'll think of something else."
A FEW MONTHS LATER
Jethro sat by Ducky's side watching his lover rather than the opening ceremony. It hadn't been easy; he'd had to call in several favors, but seeing Ducky's face as he watched the teams enter the stadium told him it had been worth it.
