ALWAYS BE LOVED

It's Valentine's Day and Ducky gets a surprise.

A pre-slash story.

Written: March 2009. Word count: 300.

Ducky whistled softly to himself as he made his way down to Autopsy.

He did enjoy Valentine's Day; even if he did take the odd liberty with it. In Ducky's opinion Valentine's Day, whilst traditionally being about lovers sending cards and gifts to one another, was actually about showing those about whom you cared, that you cared.

Thus, he gave small gifts to each member of the team; to each person about whom he cared. Dear Abigail and Ziva were very happy to receive roses, but even after several years the boys still seemed a little uncertain as to what they were meant to do with their bouquets.

Still none of that concerned Ducky; he liked to give gifts, so he did. And when he was feeling slightly less altruistic, he knew it also allowed him to 'hide' the one real lover's gift. Except even that wasn't the gift of a lover to a lover, but of someone who for decades had wanted to be a lover.

As he thought about the way Jethro had accepted his own roses, the smile he'd given him, the 'thanks, Duck', the way his eyes'd softened, Ducky sighed. And yet had there been something a little different in Jethro's gaze this year? Of course there hadn't. He stopped that thought immediately.

He shouldn't keep hoping, keep wanting, keep wishing. He shouldn't, but he did.

Once in Autopsy he found, as expected, several cards. However, one lay apart from the others. And it was in hand he recognized.

Ordering his heart to stop racing he slit the envelope and read the words.

Duck,

I can't promise you the world. I can't promise you wealth, comfort, or even happiness. But I can promise you one thing . . . no matter what happens, you will always be loved.

Jethro.
