A companion piece to The Last Time.

Ducky has played the waiting game for many, many seasons.

An established relationship story.

Written: December 2009. Word count: 300.

Season change; people don't. All too often that is the case.

Take my beloved for example. For more seasons than I care to remember he did not change.

I watched him marry and divorce three times. I watched him date and bed beautiful redheads. And he did so in an attempt to regain what he had once had. If I told him once, I told him a dozen, two dozen, times: it is not possible to go back. One cannot replace what one had with someone else. Life is not like that; people are not like that.

However, as spring became summer which changed to autumn and finally to winter, and the whole circle began again, he did not heed my words.

I watched him and I loved him. I stood by his side as he took vows he never should have taken. Vows I should not have been party to. Vows I knew he would break.

Somehow we, together and singularly, survived the marriages and the women and our relationship grew stronger. But still he did not change; still he went on trying to recapture the past.

Those years, it would not be melodramatic to say, formed the worst time of my life. And yet throughout them I had to hope; hope that one day he would realize what I had spent years telling him. Hope that one day he might change.

Hope. At times I believed it was all I had.

Hope. At times it was the only thing that kept me going.

Hope.

My hope, my waiting, paid off. Today I am getting my dearest wish. Today is the day Jethro and I are to marry. And today is the day I know he is mine and mine forever.

Seasons change, people don't. Except sometimes they do.
