It hit Tim like the proverbial two-by-four.
He was putting clothes into the washing-machine when he came across one of Jimmy's tee-shirts; the smell of formaldehyde, a scent that always seemed to linger on Jimmy even after he'd just showered, wafted up and hit Tim's nostrils. It was a smell he'd always been troubled by and it was a smell he didn't like. His dislike of it had made things a little difficult when he'd started to date Jimmy, but he'd soon realized he liked and cared about Jimmy enough to put up with it, even if at times being close to Jimmy made his eyes water and occasionally made him feel slightly sick.
However, as he knelt in front of the washing-machine Jimmy's tee-shirt in his hand, the smell he disliked in his nostrils, he realized something: he no longer disliked it; in fact he'd go as far to say he quite liked it - because it reminded him of Jimmy.
And that was when he realized; he didn't just like Jimmy any longer, he loved him. He was in love with him. Jimmy was 'the one'; Jimmy was the man he wanted to spend the rest of his life with. Jimmy was the person who completed him.
He glanced at his watch; Jimmy had promised he'd only be at NCIS for a couple of hours and he'd been gone for three, which hopefully meant he'd be on his way back to Tim's apartment. Tim quickly threw the rest of the clothes into the washing-machine, added washing-powder and hurried into the sitting room and looked out of the window. He was delighted to see Jimmy's car pull up and he watched as Jimmy got out, locked the car, put the keys into his pocket and headed towards Tim's apartment block.
Tim almost laughed at the look of surprise on Jimmy's face as he opened the door a second before Jimmy rang the bell. The surprise deepened when Tim all but dragged Jimmy into his apartment, pushing the door shut with his elbow and pulling Jimmy into his arms and plundering his mouth with his own.
As he kissed Jimmy and was kissed back by Jimmy, Tim breathed in the scent surrounding him: the light cologne Jimmy always wore, a hint of coffee and the ubiquitous formaldehyde. And as he breathed the heady smell in he realized he didn't just rather like the scent of formaldehyde, it was having a very pleasant, exciting and unexpected effect on him.
As he took his mouth away from Jimmy's for long enough to allow them both to suck some air in, he pushed himself more closely against Jimmy for a moment, enjoying the way Jimmy's eyes widened. Then he pulled back just a little and said solemnly, "I love you, Jimmy and I want to spend the rest of my life with you." The glisten of tears that appeared in Jimmy's eyes told him everything he needed to know and he kissed Jimmy again.
