The light of the moon broke the darkness as Gibbs waited for Fornell to open the door. As he waited, he replayed what Ducky had said to him about him and Fornell being in love. It was all very well having admitted it, but he still wasn't sure what to say to Fornell. Maybe he should have let Ducky give Fornell a 'pep' talk. Thinking about it, he'd have paid good money to see that.

Finally Fornell opened the door. "Jethro? Twice in one day. You'd better be careful or people'll say we're going steady." Fornell grinned before asking, "Well, which of my crime scenes have you taken over this time?"

"None."

"Oh, well what are you doing here, then?"

"Something I need to tell you."

"Go on, then." Fornell folded his arms and looked up at Gibbs.

"Can I come in?"

"Sure. Hang on, how did you get here? You didn't get McGee out of bed, did you?"

"No, Tobias. I didn't." Gibbs was starting to get annoyed.

"You didn't disobey Ducky and drive yourself, did you? You know what -"

"Tobias!" Gibbs raised his voice.

"There's no need to shout at me. I'm just being a concerned friend. Although I don't know why I bother."

Gibbs gritted his teeth, counted to ten and said more quietly. "No, I didn't drive over here, Ducky drove me?"

Fornell blinked. "Oh, does he want to come in for a drink?" He peered out into the darkness, the moon having vanished behind a cloud.

Gibbs sighed. "No. He's gone."

"Gone?"

"Yes. He dropped me off and went to visit his mom."

"How is she?"

"Tobias! Do you usually keep people standing on the doorstep?" This time Gibbs didn't wait for Fornell to reply; this time he just pushed past him, went into Fornell's house and closed the door behind him.

Fornell stared at him, his surprise clear. It increased as Gibbs locked the door. "Have I done something to piss you off?"

Gibbs shook his head. "No. Least not yet," he added and smiled.

After a moment or two, Fornell smiled back. "Come on, let's go and have a drink." He began to walk away.

Gibbs caught his arm and stopped him. "In a minute," he said. "Something I need to tell you first."

Fornell obligingly stopped and turned back to face him. "Well?" he demanded as silence followed.

Gibbs swallowed as he thought of all the things he couldn't say, didn't know how to say. So instead he fell back on what he knew: action. Somewhat clumsily given he only had one good arm, he managed to put it around Fornell, pull him nearer, bend his head and kiss him. He felt Fornell's surprised hesitation which lasted a second, if that, before Fornell put his arms around Gibbs and kissed him back.

"So," Fornell said, several hours later as they were sprawled in his bed. "Does this mean we're going steady?"

Gibbs laughed. "Yeah, Tobias. Reckon it does." He kissed Fornell again.
