FOR ONCE

For once in her life Jenny puts her wants before duty.
A pre-het story.
Written: February 2010. Word count: 300.
She finds one single pink rose in an elegant vase in her office. She smiles. Most men would have sent a bouquet not one single flower. But Trent Kort isn't like most men; in fact he's like no man she's ever known.
She sits down and thinks about him. She's attracted to him. She shouldn't be; he represents so much of what she finds reprehensible. But she is attracted to him and he feels the same way.
She sighs. It's no good; it isn't right. It wouldn't be fair to either of them. How can she have dinner with him, let him hold her, kiss her, take her to bed, when she has so little time left? Maybe if she didn't like him so much it would be easy to agree to him, easy to lose herself for a few hours in his arms; easy to forget, just for a short time, that this time next year she won't be here. She won't be in this chair, in this office, in this building. She won't be alive.
She knows it's the right thing to do and she's always done the right thing. Everything in her life has been done because of duty and to enhance her career. She's had lovers, but she brushed all of them aside because they stood in her way of duty. She hasn't had time for love; she still doesn't. Or does she?
She makes a decision. For once she's going to put what she wants before duty. She'll give him the choice. She'll tell him the truth and if he still wants her, she'll have dinner with him that evening.
She reaches for the phone. "Hi," she says when the voice that sends shivers down her spine answers. "There's something I have to tell you."
Until Tonight is the sequel to this story.
