Abby sighed as she shut the door of her lab. "I don’t know what I'm going to do," she said to her mass-spectrometer. "What should I do?" She sighed again when she didn't receive an answer.

She sat down and took a slurp of her Caf-Pow; the one Gibbs had brought her ten minutes ago. After one slurp she pushed it to one side; she felt guilty accepting the Caf-Pow from Gibbs and pretending everything was 'normal' when she knew what she knew.

The thing is she'd known for some time, but had managed to push it to one side because nothing but flirting had happened. So she'd told herself she wasn't keeping anything from Gibbs. But now . . .  Now things had changed. Now Tony and Ziva weren't just flirting with one another, weren't just confiding in Abby how much they liked the other.

Abby had never thought the day would come when she and Ziva would become close friends and certainly she'd never thought Ziva would confide in her. However, they had gradually become friends, then close friends and then one evening when Ziva had had too many cocktails she'd told Abby she loved Tony but didn't know what to do about it.

At the time Abby hadn't said anything even though less than a week earlier a morose Tony had turned up at Abby's apartment and confessed he loved Ziva Tony but didn't know what to do about it.

Not that Abby had needed either of them to tell her; she'd known for weeks, months, years even. More than once she'd wanted to bang their heads together and tell them to stop messing around with other people, to stop bickering and taunting one another and admit how they felt about one another and do something about it.

And every time she'd come close to doing something like that, maybe not actually banging their heads together, she'd quite deliberately ignored Gibbs's Rule Twelve. It always made her uncomfortable to do so, because Gibbs was so important to her, but life was so much more than rules and if she was honest she found a lot of Gibbs's rules more than a bit stifling.

But even as she'd ignored the rule, even as she told herself it didn't matter because Tony and Ziva hadn't acted on what they'd told her, she'd occasionally felt a little guilty and felt as if she was caught in the middle between Tony and Ziva on one side and Gibbs on the other. Or rather her loyalty was trapped in the middle.

But now she felt even more caught in the middle because Tony and Ziva had stopped just flirting with one another and she knew about it. Ziva had confided in her just a few minutes before Gibbs had turned up wanting the results of the test Abby had been running and handing her a Caf-Pow.

"What should I do?" she asked again and sighed; she knew it wasn't up to her to do anything.
