KING LEAR ACT IV, SCENE I

FLORIDA. APRIL 1999

Florida was hot and crowded.

Ray's apartment, bed and arms were cold and empty.

It was when his dreams became nightmares that Ray knew he had to go and find Benny.

He had to ask him.

He had to know the truth. No matter how painful it was.

He had to face it.

He had to know the worst.

He had to stand in front of the man he loved. The man who had been best friend, partner and lover. The man he had left because circumstances had dictated that he do so. And he had to ask. He had to ask the question that consumed him.

He had to.

Because he wanted, he needed, to once again find peace and serenity. Benny was the only person who could give those back to him, because Benny was the person who had taken them from him.

CANADA. APRIL 1999

Canada was cold and uncrowded.

Benny's cabin, bed and arms were warm and full.

Now that he had found Benny, Ray knew that his nightmares were over, and once again his dreams would be reality.

He had asked Benny.

He now knew the truth. The truth that was not the least bit painful.

He had faced it.

He had known the worst.

He had stood in front of the man he loved. The man who had been best friend, partner and lover. The man he had left because circumstances had dictated that he do so. And he had asked. He had asked the question that had consumed him.

"Did you sleep with him?"

With one word Benny had given him back what he wanted, what he needed: peace and serenity. As he lay in Benny's arms, letting waves of both sweep over him, tired out from their lovemaking, Ray knew he'd never again lose either.
