Ben took the compass from his pocket and looked at it.
It was broken.
It hadn't survived Stanley dropping it.
Ben had only rescued it, climbing down the sheer rock face, because Ray had given it to him.
Now it showed only one direction: due south.
He thought back to his old life, his partner, his friend.
He thought back to what they'd had and how much more he'd hoped they'd have.
He looked again at the broken compass and realized.
He realized it was telling him where to go.
He'd follow its instructions, and maybe hope would become reality.
